British Family History
Researching your British family history is a personal journey of discovery.
People decide to find out more about their British ancestry for many different reasons. Perhaps, they live many miles from the United Kingdom and do not know anything about their family history roots, or maybe they have done very well in life and are curious to discover where their ancestral story began. Plain curiosity is another, potential, reason to begin on the road to researching their British ancestors.
Whatever, the motivation behind the wish to locate your lost generations, it can resemble a good book, in as much as, when you first start a book you do not know the characters, but by the end (if there ever is such a thing with family history), you can be totally caught up with their lives.
You can sympathise when tragedy strikes your Great Grandparents lives and egg them on as their life, possibly, triumphs over adversity. Your British ancestors can tell your family history story, through birth, marriage, death, service and, of course, census records.
Did your Great-Great grandfather move from, for example, Scotland to England to find work, then met your Great-Great grandmother, giving you, both, Scottish and English ancestors? Discovering where their children were born and when can tell you if they constantly moved from county to county searching for work. How many children they had and how many survived beyond their first five years of life can tell you much about the infant mortality rate of your British ancestors and you can feel a part of their happiness when a child is born and can empathise when that child dies.
Did they serve in the British armed forces of the Great War and did they return home to their loved ones or did they tragically die?
Finding details of brothers and sisters of your direct ancestral line can, perhaps, put you in contact with distant present-day British family relatives that you did not know existed. They may have much to share with you, such as, family photographs, stories and anecdotes.
