Do You Have Scotish Clan Ancestors?

Scottish Ancestors
Are your Scottish roots based in the Highlands of Scotland? If they are then you could well be part of a Scottish Clan.
Scottish Clan Names
If your name is a known clan name, such as MacGillvray, MacInnes, Mackay, Buchanan, Davidson, Gordon, MacDonald etc, and your Scottish genealogy is based in the areas associated with these names, then you may well know your Scottish Clan allegiances.
Highland Names
Maybe you have a Highland name but no clan, perhaps then your name is allied to a large clan.
Watson
If your Scottish family name is Watson then you may well be part of the Watson Clan (Motto: Insperata Floruit, Flourished Unexpectedly) but, probably only if your family hailed from the Saughton area of Edinburgh. If your Scottish roots are in Stirlingshire or West Perthshire then your Watson line is more likely to be allied to Clan Buchanan (Motto: Clarior hinc Honos, Brighter hence the honour), but if your Scottish ancestral roots are in rural Aberdeenshire, Kincardineshire or the Glens of Angus then your family would, perhaps, be allied to Clan Forbes (Motto: Grace me guide) of Alford, Aberdeenshire.
Other examples of the importance of knowing where your Scottish family origins are:
Caird:
Dependent on where your Scottish roots are then you could be allied to the Sinclair or MacGregor Clan.
MacBeath or MacBeth:
The location, once again, determines if your allegiances are with the MacBain, MacDonald or MacLean Clans.
Johnson:
Could you be allied to the MacDonald’s of Ardnamurchan or maybe Clan Gunn of Caithness?
Ferguson (Motto: Dulcius ex asperses, Sweeter out of difficulties)
Do you come from the Clan Ferguson line of Strachur, on the North East shores of Loch Fyne or the MacNaughton’s of Dunderave?
Scottish Family History
The above list is not exhaustive. There are many other Scottish surnames that have two or more potential Clan allegiances.
Discover Your Past can help you to unravel your Scottish Clan associations* as part of your Scottish family history package. We can provide you with your clan motto, photographs of historical interest to your clan (perhaps a castle or scene of a battle), pictures of your clan badge etc. Please feel free to discuss this with our researcher and we will be more than happy to help you reconnect to your Scottish roots.
Why not see if your Scottish surname is connected to one of the Great Clans of Scotland.

* It is difficult to “prove” with any historical accuracy whether your family were allied to any one of the Scottish Clans and Discover Your Past intends the information provided to be used, only, as a guide to the possibility.
